Peace by Piece

Consider having the initial gathering in a park or community space away from the participating schools. Use icebreakers to help students learn each other’s names, team-building challenges, or interactive storytelling to create a welcoming atmosphere. Activities that encourage laughter—such as a group challenge or a playful cultural trivia game—help set a positive tone. Students will feel more comfortable engaging in deeper conversations as the year progresses.

Each chapter hosts a school visit for all Peace by Piece members. Spending an entire school day together enables students—often for the first time—to immerse themselves and experience firsthand different religious and cultural environments and daily routines. This type of engagement fosters a deeper appreciation for both the differences and commonalities, strengthening the relationships and connections crucial for meaningful interfaith dialogue.

Hosts create the day’s itinerary, sharing what is most meaningful about their school community. This student-led approach fosters ownership, encourages thoughtful engagement, and allows hosts to share their faith and culture in a way that feels personal and welcoming to their peers. 

Activities when hosting could be scheduled around holiday celebrations to further demonstrate lived religious practice.

• Art projects -- Art provides another language to express beliefs, values, and shared humanity in a creative and collaborative way, fostering a visual display of connections and mutual understanding beyond words.
• Attending classes together -- Attending a variety of classes allows visiting students to see how subjects are taught and discussed in other educational settings.
• Participating in a shared meal -- Sharing lunch together, perhaps incorporating traditional or cultural foods from the host school's community, helps spark conversations about dietary traditions and religious practices.
• Observing or joining in prayer time or religious service -- Witnessing and respecting a school’s religious practices, such as morning prayers, chapel services, or Jumu’ah (Friday prayer), helps foster understanding.
• Engaging in a panel or discussion circle -- Student-led conversation about faith, identity, and shared values can create a space for open dialogue and learning from one another’s perspectives.
• Touring the school with a student guide -- On a school tour, student hosts can showcase key aspects of their school, including places of worship, special traditions, or historical elements unique to their institution.
• Working on a Service Project Together – Engage in a joint community service activity, such as packing meals for those in need or organizing donations, to bond over shared values of giving and social responsibility.
• Playing sports or team games -- A friendly game of soccer or basketball, or a scavenger hunt game can help break down barriers and create a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere.
• Learning about religious holidays and customs -- Host interactive sessions where students present and explain the significance of holidays like Ramadan, Easter, Passover, or other traditions unique to their faith.
• Sharing personal stories -- Create space for students to share experiences about their faith, culture, and personal identity to build empathy and deepen connections.
• Reflecting together at the end of the day -- Conclude the visit with a reflection session to share what they learned, what surprised them, and how the experience deepened their understanding of one another.

Joint service projects, such as feeding the homeless, organizing a clothing drive, or cleaning up a park, reinforce shared values and build friendships across religious lines. Students put their faith into action while appreciating each other’s beliefs.

• Interfaith Retreats Students can discuss their experiences, share personal growth, and propose future interfaith initiatives.
• Guest Speakers and Panels Feature guest speakers or panel discussions involving religious leaders, scholars, and activists from different faiths to share insights and engage students in dialogue.
• Cultural Exchange Events Celebrate religious holidays and traditions to foster mutual appreciation.
